What You'll Need

Here's what you need to successfully raise baby chicks into healthy laying hens.

Brooder Box

  • Large plastic tote or wooden box
  • Enclosed on sides & top
  • Draft-free but ventilated

Heat Lamp

  • 250W red heat bulb
  • Hang 18" above chicks
  • Thermometer to monitor temp
Week 1: 95°F
Week 2: 90°F
Week 3: 85°F
Week 4: 80°F

Bedding & Feed

  • Pine shavings (not cedar!)
  • Starter feed (20% protein)
  • Chick grit for digestion
Tip: Add vitamins & electrolytes to water for first 3 days

Waterer

  • 1 gal per 25 chicks
  • Raised slightly above bedding
  • Clean & fresh daily
Important: Add marbles or stones to prevent drowning

Important Tips for Success

Keep them warm: Chicks can't regulate body temp for first 3 weeks
No drafts: Cold drafts are deadly to young chicks
Clean water: Dip each chick's beak when first placing in brooder
Watch for pasty butt: Clean droppings off vent daily
Social chicks: Handle gently 10-15 min/day for bonding
Gradual transition: Move to coop slowly around 6-8 weeks
